The Boredom Cure
“What a boring event,” the man said who was standing next to me.
In all honesty, he was kind of right. Ironically, the event that took place on this day wasn’t very “eventful.” There were not many people who were having a good time.
Almost on cue, however, I heard someone burst out in laughter. This sure caught my attention. When I turned and looked at this person I saw a big smile on her face and a sparkle in her eye. This person was having a blast. What was she doing differently? Why was she having so much fun?
I guess I said these questions out loud because the man next to me sighed and said, “Because she’s only four years old! That’s just what kids do.”
I thought to myself, “There must be a reason why so many kids can have fun wherever they are.” Then it hit me. It was so obvious. Kids are extremely curious people.
Let me explain.
When everything is interesting, there’s no time to be bored. It’s not as though young children are geniuses who have found some powerful formula to convert boredom into excitement. They’re just curious. That’s all. It’s that simple.
I observed this little girl for a few minutes as she would pick some grass up off of the ground and just stare at it. You could almost here her mind saying, “What is this? Why is it green? Why does it smell like this? I wonder if it tastes good?” Even the smallest things in life fascinated her. Does this mean we should act like little kids and roll around in the grass, scream, and be silly? Of course not. But there is definitely a lesson to be learned. It’s a genuine sense of curiosity that makes life interesting. The more curious you are about the world you live in, the more interesting and exciting your life will be.
The word curious literally means: “Eager to learn more.” You’ll know you have curiosity if you willingly search to understand things. Believe it or not, this makes life about a million times more fun and interesting! Even Einstein credited this attribute to his success.
I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious. - Albert Einstein
If you think about it, life without curiosity is work! If you’re not interested about what makes you tick or what goes on around you, then life can feel like you’re being assigned a never-ending amount homework. No thanks! Have you ever spoken to a sports fanatic? Sometimes it’s amazing how people will remember names, important dates, and statistics of countless athletes—some of whom died over fifty years ago! Do you think they would consider all of that memorizing “work”? No, way! It’s what they love to do.
No one needs to motivate you to do your hobby, right? Why? Because it interests you—it makes you curious. It’s as simple as that.
The cure for boredom is curiosity and the best part is, this same enthusiasm will spread into other areas of your life until it seems like 24 hours per day just isn’t enough time. I remember when somebody once told me, “There’s no such thing as boredom, only boring people.” Interesting, huh?
Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. - Gandhi
Sometimes our curiosity can fade away as we get older. Picasso said, “We are all born artists, the challenge is staying one.” He’s right. We are all born with creativity and curiosity. The trick is re-igniting the flame. You can do this by asking yourself questions that engage your brain—questions that cause you to search for information that interests you.
- What makes people tick?
- Why do I do what I do? Or, What drives me?
- I wonder if there is a better way to do this?
- What about this have I not noticed before?
- How does/could this apply to my life?
- How does this work?
- Who invented this?
Passion, enthusiasm, and excitement all begin with a genuine spark of curiosity. The moment your mind gets curious, a new world of adventure and possibility appears.
Much success to you,
